How to soothe nausea and morning sickness – Treat nausea with home remedies

Morning sickness is nausea during pregnancy. Such women complain of severe vomiting, headache, reduced diet, difficulty in passing urine and swelling in the feet among other problems. For some women, it can go on the entire day and not just morning. Symptoms can vary in different woman to woman. Morning sickness is often worse in the first trimester, where a single bout can give immense trouble to pregnant women.

Exact reasons of morning sickness are not known. What can be attributed to morning sickness can be change in hormones and high oestrogen level. Enhanced sense of smell and sensitivity to odours is the reason behind vomiting. The gastrointestinal lining also becomes sensitive during pregnancy. Morning sickness is often considered normal during pregnancy.  The patient always feels dizzy and weak throughout the day. It is also often said that morning sickness can be seen in women who are expecting more than one baby. About 80% of pregnant women complain of morning sickness during the first trimester and it can stretch on to second trimester.

Below are the home remedies which can help soothe morning sickness among women:

Lemon

Squeeze a lemon in lukewarm water and have it early in the morning. Follow the ritual every day for some days to stop vomiting and help relieve the patient. The patient can also suck on half a lemon every day or throughout the day for better results.

Ginger ale

Ginger is said to be the best ingredient to cure morning sickness. Patients can suck on ginger or chew it raw. Ginger juice can be added in a glass of lukewarm water and be given to such patients for instant relief. Consumption of ginger ale and ginger tea can also be good ways to cure morning sickness.

Ginger can also be consumed with a salad consisting cucumber, radish, carrot, tomato and spinach. Cut ginger into small pieces. Sprinkle them on the salad, add lemon juice to that and consume the salad.

Ice water

If the weather permits, give the patient a glass of cold water to stop vomiting and give relief from any inflammation.

Orange juice & sweet lime juice

Orange juice or consumption of oranges throughout the day also helps soothe morning sickness. Sweet lime juice is also a good option to help the patients.

Coconut water

Coconut water is mild, rich in electrolytes and cold in nature. It should be given to women complaining of morning sickness for soothing effect. Coconut water helps restore the electrolytes in the body which the patient loses in large quantities leading to them feeling dizzy and weak.

Ice packs

Keep ice packs on the patient’s stomach to stop vomiting.

Preserved rose petals

Take preserved rose petals with sugar in equal quantities and have it throughout the day. The mixture helps the patient get relief from constant vomiting.

Pomegranate

Consume pomegranate seeds with juice throughout the day. Pomegranate juice is also recommended for such patients. Pomegranate is rich in vitamin A and electrolytes. 

Raisins

Consumption of raisins is good for such patients. Also, one can soak some raisins overnight and then consume it with the water for better results.

Amla

Women who complain of morning sickness should consume amla juice for better results. Consumption of Preserved amla is also effective in such patients.

Ajwain

Consume ajwain with rock salt 15 minutes before and after all the meals throughout the day. It helps soothe the stomach and gives relief from morning sickness.

Dates

Consume 5-10 dates with milk twice a day for better results.

Figs

Boil some figs in milk. The patient should chew the boiled figs and drink the lukewarm milk later. This helps create more iron in women’s body. It helps give strength to the body.

Pineapple

Cut pineapple in rings and add black pepper powder and rock salt to it. The patient should consume this. It helps give relief from swollen feet.  

Watermelon

Watermelon juice also soothes morning sickness. Grind 10 grams of watermelon seeds and dissolve it in a cup of water, add 2-3 sugar cubes to that along with lemon juice. The patient should consume this mixture 15-20 minutes before the meals.
