Tonsils are two masses of lymphatic tissue one on each side of the throat. The tissues generally help fight bacterial and viral infections. They absorb bacteria and viruses which may, otherwise, enter one’s system and cause infections. Tonsillitis is the inflammation of these tissues, which occurs mostly in children and strikes hard during changing weather. The inflammation occurs when the tonsils are unable to fight the germs resulting in swollen throat.

Tonsillitis is often accompanied with high fever, shiver and dry phlegm. Bad breath is also one of the symptoms. Swelling and redness can reach the tongue after some days of the onset. Mix a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to a glass of warm water and use it for gargling. You can also consume it and to add flavour add a tablespoon of honey.
Chamomile being a medicinal herb has healing properties and owing to its anti-inflammatory properties it reduces swelling, inflammation caused because of tonsillitis. Brew in some dried chamomile in a saucepan of water, after it has boiled a little strain it and have it. In order to get best results, have chamomile tea 3-4 times in a day. Also, other than adding sugar add a tablespoon of honey.
It surely sounds weird but grinding some raw onions with honey and water so that to eat the paste like mixture in frequent hours. Onions are naturally said to have antibacterial properties which kills the bacteria that causes tonsillitis in the first place. Consuming onions on a daily basis will help you get rid of tonsillitis naturally.
A quick remedy to get rid of the pain and swelling tonsillitis cause, one should get some alum and put it to boil with some water. Once you see it getting dissolved with the liquid, use it to gargle. The salt kills any bacterial and viral infections. Mix one teaspoon of rock salt in one cup of lukewarm water and gargle for instant relief. A warm bath in the throat region with the help of a cloth can also help.
Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties and its consumption with lukewarm water can help soothe the sore throat. Another mixture includes boiling water, turmeric, rock salt and black pepper together for five minutes. Strain it and use the water to gargle twice a day, especially at night before the patient goes to sleep. If done every day, tonsillitis can be cured in a month. It can also curb its re-occurrence. Turmeric is used to prepare a poultice applied to the throat to relieve soreness and inflammation. It is kept in place with cotton pads.
Black pepper has anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and thus, can give instant relief to the person with tonsillitis. Black pepper can be consumed in powder form with honey three to four times a day. It can be boiled in water and can be consumed throughout the day when lukewarm.
Basil and ginger tea
Bring basil (tulsi) leaves, ginger and black pepper to a boil. Let it cool and then add milk to that. Drink it before you go to sleep. The tea can help treat Tonsillitis.
Carrot juice is also very effective in treating Tonsillitis. The patient should have carrot juice in a small glass everyday for two-three months.
Lemon has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It can treat most infections due to its vitamin C content. To treat tonsillitis, one can add half a lemon to a cup of lukewarm water. Add black pepper and honey to that and keep sipping several cups throughout the day.
Cinnamon is rich in antimicrobial properties and is used to treat tonsillitis. A cup of lukewarm water mixed with a teaspoon of cinnamon and honey reduces the swelling, pain and inflammation.
A cup of hot toddy can soothe a sore throat. The toddy is prepared with lukewarm water, two tablespoon of Irish whisky, lemon juice and honey mixed together. The person with tonsillitis can sip on this twice a day to help fight the infection.
